Mission: Teaching children with Autism and Down syndrome
Workshop Activity: Animal and robot-themed weaving
At H2O Music Studio,Woven UP adapted the traditional concept of weaving into a more playful and engaging experience for children. Using recycled cardboard, we created animal-shaped looms such as alpacas and robots to make the activity more relatable.
Since the workshop had a small number of participants, we personalized the activity—allowing each child to choose the loom shape and yarn color they liked best. For participants with shorter attention spans, we used thick, colorful yarns instead of fabric strips to help them better understand the weaving process.
After weaving, we encouraged the children to decorate their pieces however they liked. From teachers, we learned that children with autism often respond better to clear, structured tasks—so instead of vague instructions, we guided them with marked areas to color or decorate. Children added eyes, mouths, and other features to their woven animals and robots.
Through this process, they practiced fine motor skills, visual-motor coordination, patience, sustained attention, and experienced emotional growth by completing and proudly owning their creations.
