Mission: Teaching students with low-functioning autism

Workshop Activity: Woven animal dolls

At Lok Bai Lek School, we worked with a larger group of 16 students with low-functioning autism. To ensure accessibility and engagement, we chose animal-shaped looms and used thick yarn and colorful fabric scraps.

Just like at H2O Studio, we found that structured instruction worked best. We marked out clear zones for decoration, helping students feel more comfortable without the pressure of open-ended decision-making.

Students also selected their own fabric textures and colors, then painted or glued decorations—such as eyes and patterns—onto their woven animals. The result was a fun, calming experience tailored to their needs.
